Key to Successful Resolutions: Execution

The start of the new year often prompts people to make goals and resolutions for the coming year. Choosing the goal is usually easy. Sometimes the goal chooses you. (Anyone step on a scale or check their bank balance recently?)

Coming up with a plan is a little harder. You know what you want to achieve, now you have to figure out how to do it. Figuring out a plan that will get you where you want to go takes some effort.

The hardest part is the execution. If losing weight is your goal, and your plan to lose weight is to exercise three times a week, you’re not going to lose any weight until you execute the plan. And it’s not enough to execute the plan once or twice. You have to do it over and over, week after week.

Most people call this a habit. I like to think of it as consistent execution. A habit can turn into something that people do without thinking about or realizing why they do it. Consistent execution requires a deliberate mindfulness that you do it to a get a specific result.

Ask yourself: Am I doing things today that will get me the result I want and can I do it again tomorrow?”
